Shop Love…Lion In The Sun
We’re so excited to start a new series on the Kate & Birdie blog called Shop Love. The series will feature our favourite shops where you can find K&B goods and will give you a peek into the story and people behind these wonderful storefronts.
Today we’re taking a closer look at Lion in the Sun, a charming paper goods shop located in the Park Slope neighbourhood of Brooklyn, NY. The shop – a sister store to Lion in the Sun of Huntington on Long Island – was founded by Melinda Morris in 2002. We first met Melinda at the National Stationery Show in NYC back in 2009 and have had the pleasure of getting to know her and her shop over the last three years.
Melinda grew up working at the original Long Island location, which just so happens to be owned and operated by her parents, and chose to expand the family business by opening her own store in Park Slope. Melinda co-owns the store alongside her husband Dave Morris. We love the store’s focus on quality, earth friendly paper products, as well as their family and community ideals. And, with their reputation for stunning invitations and gorgeous paper products, we couldn’t be more pleased to have our goods carried in their shop. – Amy & Gloria
To get an idea of what makes Lion in the Sun Park Slope tick, we asked Melinda a few questions…
What inspires you?
On a personal level, I’m inspired by my surrounding of the city and nature, but professionally I’m most often inspired by my clients ideas or their stories and finding a way to express that in their invite.
Name 3 things in the shop you can’t live/work without.
No. 1 – Email! Although that seems obvious, right?
No. 2 – Believe it or not a fax machine. We still use it 1000 times a day – crazy, right?!
No. 3 – White-out ez correct tape.
If you could spend a weekend anywhere, where would you go?
Fantasy…Tanzania. Reality…New Orleans.
What is your favourite Kate & Birdie product?
The skyline note cards with the lampposts and the little creatures. And, the new Bicycle Notebook now sits on my desk. I know they are Winnipeg, but to me they are Brooklyn through and through.
Thank you Melinda!
Kate & Birdie’s new Bicycle Notebook is a lovely accent on any desk surface.
Kate & Birdie’s Lamp Post note card – a favourite of Melinda’s – is inspired by New York’s skyline.
Kate & Birdie’s Lamp Post note card depicts a park setting filled with feathery friends and is fitting for every occasion.
